In the early hours of Tuesday 3 February a large diameter water main, running over the Fairsite, burst and flooded much of the surrounding land. From early February 2026 The Gentle Wild Forest School provider will be running nature-based learning activities on the parcel of land shown in the pdf below. Initially sessions will be run on a Friday and Saturday with the aim of adding mid-week sessions in the future.

Before the end of March 2026 the following tree works will be carried out:

On Wednesday 21 January, London Universities & Colleges Athletics will be holding a cross country event on the Common. Runners will follow a circular route starting at the lower field by the Ecology Centre, over the hills near the Croydon side of the Common and back towards the Ecology Centre.

Over the next week soil will be added to some of the boundary bunds. This is for safety and to prevent unwanted vehicle incursion.

Over the next few weeks scrub clearance will be taking place over several areas on the Common. This is to prevent scrub encroachment into sensitive habitats on the Common. Sites included are:

On Saturday 10 January, Herne Hill Harriers and Clapham Chasers will be holding a Surrey League cross country event on the Common. Before the end of December the following tree works will be carried out:

Over the next few weeks, selected areas of bramble will be cut. Areas included are on Bidders, Mill House, 7 islands and Gunsite subsites. This will facilitate the regeneration of grassland.

Over the next month soil will be moved from a stockpile near 7 islands pond to reinforce several bunds around the edge of the Common.

Over recent months there has been a significant increase in kite debris including 100’s of metres of line littering the Common. Discarded line can be harmful to people and wildlife. This has been most noticeable on the hills covering Bidders and 1. island sub-sites. Kite flying is permitted but please take any associated litter away…

The Fair will be arriving on Monday 13 November and be open to the public over the period 25 October until 1 November from early afternoon until 10pm in the evening

In the near future the footpath running from the corner of Croydon Road, by the BP garage, to the bottom of Galpins Road will be upgraded. A contractor is currently undertaking acid grass clearance on 7 islands, Bidders and Golf course sub-sites. This is to maintain and enhance the important acid grass coverage.
